Japanese company Genepax unviels car that runs on Water

I would not believe it, if news would not be carried by Reuters. And if I did not see their video coverage. Also in my experience Japanese companies usually do not lie, and would not go public, if this was a hoax or not a completely working unit. Company CEO Kiyoshi Hirasawa presented their eco-friendly car that runs on nothing but water in a test drive. genepax h20 water carWhile test car is one of smalles (like Smart), the company is in talks for mass production of engine unit (converter from water to hydrogen), production of which currently costs 15.000 USD, but as soon as next year with right quantities it could be lowered to below 5.000 USD…

Big advantage of this solution is that there is only water in car's tank, and hydrogen is produces on needed basis. So no difficult hydrogen storage questions, and safety concerns… Genepax is alread in talks about mass production with another Japanese manufacturer.

The car has an energy generator that extracts hydrogen from water that is poured into the car's tank. The generator then releases electrons that produce electric power to run the car. Their new "Water Energy System (WES)," generates power by supplying water and air to the fuel and air electrodes using a proprietary technology called the Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA). The secret behind MEA is a special material that is capable of breaking down water into hydrogen and oxygen through a chemical reaction. Exact details were kept secret, but new process, while based on existing technology, is expected to produce hydrogen from water for longer time than any method currently available. Furthermore, WES does not require a hydrogen reformer, a high-pressure hydrogen tank, or any special catalysts to get the job done. Acording to Genepax's results, one liter of water (and you can use any kind of water, even sea water) powers the car for about one hour, with top speed of around 80 km/h.

During a recent conference, Genepax unveiled a fuel cell stack with a rated output of 120W and a fuel cell system with a rated output of 300W—and there are plans for a 1kw-class generation system for use in both electric vehicles and houses sometime in the future. At this point, the cost of production on the water-powered vehicle engine itself is around about ¥2,000,000 (US$18,522), but they hope to drop the price to ¥500,000 (US$4600) or less if they succeed in bringing it into mass production.

Ken @ 4:47 am

Why do you believe Reuters?

Why do you believe the president of this company (or anyone for that matter) over the First Law of Thermodynamics, which this car violates?

Reuters did no fact checking.

You did not see a car running on nothing but water.

You saw a car with a device into which they poured a fluid which you presume is water. You are assuming that the device into which they may have poured water is actually part of the propulsion system of the car. You've assumed that the car isn't actually powered by a battery under the hood.

At the very best, you can only get the same amount of energy from burning hydrogen as you spent breaking the hydrogen out of the water, leaving ZERO energy left to run the car.

Genepax claims that water is the only fuel and the only exhaust from this car. Why even fill the tank? Why not just connect the exhaust pipe to the intake of their magic device? Or would that just make it tooo bloody obvious for you that they are running a perpetual motion scam?

It is absolutely shocking how much coverage this story has received. How many fool investors are going to be scammed, giving Genepax their money for an impossible device that will never be mass produced … because it will never do as claimed. How many fools (besides yourself) have you helped Genepax suck in by running this story without any critical thought applied to it?

WILLY @ 6:37 am

I am sure that if Mr. Dingle from the Philippines is still alive today- he would react instantly about this innovation. I've seen it myself on TV when he demonstrated this water fueled car in the late '80s. If this would go into mass production, middle east countries would likewise be in big, big trouble!

RAJU GEORGE @ 8:11 am

DEAREST FRIENDS

CARS THAT RUNS ON WATER I REALLY LIKED VERY MUCH

MANY THANKS TO YOUR TEAM

GOD BLESS YOU

Jeff @ 9:35 am

This is probably a scam. If the car is fueled only on water as their japanese website- http://www.genepax.co.jp proclaims, the reaction by which they obtain power is
H20 –> 2(H+) + 0- {Splitting of water through unknown WES mechanism}
2(H+) + O- –> H20 + Energy {energy reclamation through fuel cell}

The sum of these reactions?
H20 –> H20 + Energy.
This is a clear violation of the laws of thermodynamics, and barring some revolutionary change in the laws of physics this is clearly impossible.
Furthermore, they claim that the engine produces a 300Watt output, which translates to about .4 horsepower. .4 Horsepower isn't enough to drive anything at 80kph.
Furthermore, H+ and O- sit in higher energies of formation than H2O. The generation of these ions requires energy, where as the WES claims that they can just split these.

In any case, extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof, and Genepax has clearly left many questions unanswered. This video could easily be a hoax. Their lack of a patent application leads to further questioning of the legitimacy of their energy system

Subject: The M-Cycle for Combustion Engine with Thermal Chemical Recuperation offers up thermal efficiency (>2 times) and reduce pollution (>10 times)

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Thermo Chemical Recuperation (TCR) enables recovery of combustion engine exhaust heat to chemically convert the hydrocarbon fuel (natural gas) into a higher calorific flow fuel stream containing a significant concentration of hydrogen. This technique of recycling the engine exhaust heat can reduce fuel use (heat rate). In addition, the hydrogen enhanced combustion also allows stable engine operation at a higher air-fuel ratio (leaner combustion) or greater amounts of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) for very low NOx production.

Heat (sensible and latent) from engine exhaust drives endothermic reforming reactions:
fuel + steam or fuel + steam +CO2 (from recycled exhaust gas) used to produce H2 and CO. TCR uses typical reforming reactions to increase fuel energy content:
CH4 + H2O -> CO + 3H2
CH4 + CO2 -> 2CO = 2H2
Hydrogen content in the partially reformed fuel can be > 30% by volume. The calorific content of the hydrocarbon fuel can be increased by up to 28% with TCR process.
Hydrogen can be produced in a variety of methods but the best method is the steam-reformation of hydrocarbon fuels.

Increase of absolute humidity of the reformed fuel is critical parameter affecting TCR energy gain and hydrogen fraction in the engine charge. Also, TCR system efficiency goes up in proportion to amount of heat converted from exhaust gas to chemical energy.

The proven Maisotsenko Cycle (M-Cycle) is the best for TCR technologies because it realizes the most efficient humidifying process for hydrocarbon fuel by recovering of the maximum heat (sensible and latent) from exhaust gas (see attachment: «Untitled-Scanned-01»).
These processes happen simultaneously and they are being realized using only one but unique apparatus as the Idalex Humidifying Recuperator (IHR). This apparatus is covered under our U.S. Patent No 6,948,558.

Using IHR through the M-Cycle, instead conventional recuperative exhaust gas reformer, it is the best heat recovery fuel reforming apparatus, which offers outstanding energy efficiency and environmental performance for TCR technologies.

The Idalex Humidifying Recuperator (IHR) allows the lowest possible temperatures for the outgoing exhaust gas. These temperatures are much less than temperatures of conventional similar systems obtained in the outgoing exhaust gas by evaporating water into the hydrocarbon fuel. It can get high potential benefits for any thermal and combustion processes by using just one apparatus through the M-Cycle.
Also, the condensate water from the exhaust gases can be returned to the wet channels of the IHR for humidifying process of the hydrocarbon fuel. It guarantees that water is reclaimed for needful humidifying processes.

FIG. 2 (see attachment: «M-cycleTurbocharger2») shows TCR system for internal combustion engine with IHR through the M-Cycle.
The M-Cycle is a revolutionary thermodynamic breakthrough for energy recovery, which utilizes the most efficient heat (enthalpy) recovery process for any combustion engine (see our U.S. Patent No7,007,453 and FIG. 1 from attachment: «M-cycleTurbocharger1»). This patent contains 14 different schemes for combustion power systems through the M-Cycle and each scheme is optimal for concrete conditions of the power reception. For example, the best schemes for turbine combustion systems, using TCR, you can see at Figs. 5 and 6 in this U.S. Patent No 7,007,453.
Also, there is a publication about the M-Cycle for producing power:
(Shortcut to:http://www.coolerado.com/NewsAndNotable/MCombustionTurbineCycle.pdf).

Sometimes, it is rational to use for internal combustion engine the M-Cycle with simultaneously humidifying process for air (before its combustion) and for fuel (for its TCR), using one IHR for fuel and another IHR for compressed air (see FIG. 3 from attachment: «M-cycleTurbocharger3»). Together with TCR positive effect, it is possible additionally to significant increase the thermal efficiency for the internal combustion engine (> 70%). The engine, using humidified compressed air through the M-Cycle, becomes less then half the size of a standard engine to generate the same amount of power. This is possible because much more power produced by the engine goes to the drive train rather then to compress air as in a standard engine. In addition and because of the higher efficiency in this engine, pollution is dramatically reduced due to the water vapor creating a more even burning process during combustion (reduce pollution >10 times). Additional water will not be needed, because the M-Cycle constantly reclaims water in the exhaust gas.

The Idalex Humidifying Recuperator (IHR) consists (see attachments 1, 2, and 3) of the product channel 6 for exhaust gas 14 and dry 7 and wet 8 channels for gas (fuel 17 or air 15). Hot exhaust gas 14 after engine goes through the product channel 6 of the IHR, where it is being cooled and transfers heat energy to the gas stream (for example, fuel 17). Low temperature exhaust gas 14 after the product channel 6 will be harmlessly exhausted. Simultaneously the gas stream is first passed over the dry channel 7, where it is precooled, and after to the wet channel 8 of the IHR. This gas cools itself in the dry channel 7 by being passed in counterflow to the wet channel 8 by adding moisture to it through an indirect evaporative heat and mass transfer process. In the wet channel 8 the gas stream temperature will increase in the saturated condition moving up the saturation line on the psychrometric chart, shown in attachment: «Untitled-Scanned-01». This fully saturated gas stream (fuel 17 or air 15) has huge absolute humidity because its temperature is approached to temperature of the inlet exhaust gas 14.

Today the M-Cycle is proven technology all over the world. Also, I can demonstrate in any place the phenomenal characteristics of the M-Cycle for wetting, heat recovery and cooling applications through our unique and portable demonstrative apparatus.
The M-Cycle has been successfully tested and researched by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory NREL (USA), SMUD, Delphi, PG&E, Sanwa (Japan), etc. The M-Cycle has transitioned into the Coolerado Cooler from the conceptual stage to commercial applications which offers up to an 85% reduction of power for cooling and air conditioning.
Since then, this product received wide recognition from all over the world: Coolerado Cooler won the International 2004 R&D 100 award, the US Green Builder 2006 Top Ten Product award, and the 2007 Sustainable Business Silver Medal of Honor award, the History Channel and Invent Now Award 2007, and just recently, the BUILDING PRODUCTS Top 100 Winner for 2008.
The M-Cycle is a revolutionary new breakthrough in thermodynamics (see our U.S. Patents No 6,497,10 7; 6,581,402; 6,705,096; 6,776,001; 6,779,351; 6,854,278; 6,948,558; 7,007,453; 7,197,887; 7,228,669; etc.).
The world leader in automotive thermal technology Delphi Corp. has since license the manufacturing right to produce the special heat and mass exchanger (HMX), which realizes the M-Cycle, and has begun to mass-produce this product (Coolerado Cooler) for stationary building air conditioning, vehicular air conditioning, etc.
Coolerado air conditioners can be found in markets around the world- in Japan, Europe, and South America, Singapore as well as in the USA from Washington to Florida.
(Shortcut to: http://www1.eere.energy.gov/femp/pdfs/tir_coolerado.pdf).

Coolerado Cooler is the low pressure, low temperature heat and mass exchanger (HMX) through the M-Cycle for cooling and air conditioning systems, which is made from cheap materials as plastic and special paper.
While we have build and commercialized HMX’s, we have not built high pressure and temperature HMX’s that becomes the Idalex Humidifying Recuperator (IHR) for thermal and combustion systems.

Based on existing technology and metallurgy, this IHR can be built for wetting processes, producing power, heat recovery processes and etc. But for all these applications the M-Cycle is the same, processes are the same and performance is the same. Difference is only one; it is parameters (temperatures and pressures) of flows (fuel, air, gas, exhaust gas; etc.). They define design of apparatuses and their materials. But all these apparatuses are similar in operation.

Idalex is looking for a partner that has the technical expertise for combustion engine technologies, which can realized the M-Cycle for its product. Up to this point Idalex has been self-funded. Idalex has presented a pier-reviewed paper at the 2004 ASME Turbo conference and have had several other pier reviews, all very favorable (see attachment GT 2003 38080). Idalex has worked with several simple math models that demonstrate the concepts prototyped by others.

Idalex would like help in developing the contacts to develop the next step of modeling the M-Cycle with existing combustion engine software. I know you have own software for combustion engines. It is possible to use this software, but a model the M-Cycle in a more sophisticated combustion engine program that has the capability to investigate adding large quantities of moisture for compressed air before its combustion.
This may involve some additions to existing modeling that will allow the M-Cycle to be shown. This modeling is possible to make very fast and with minimum expenses. But this step is critical, as this will allow seeing the true potential, size, weight, and eventual costing its combustion engine.

I am convinced that the M-Cycle will provide world with an opportunity for rapid development of new renewable energy technologies for cleaner environment and greater energy independence.

There may be a mutual beneficial relationship we can develop.

The First Law of Thermodynamics was derived in the mid 1800's. To think that this knowledge applies to everything in the universe when in the 1800's people never heard of atomic explosions which by the way release much larger quantities of energy then is used up to cause the explosion is ludicrous. Not everything in the universe can possibly be explained by this law because we don't know everything about the universe. To look blindly at something an say it does not work because of some law derived over 100 years ago says that you think you know everything there is to know in the universe and that you think the guy who developed the law knows everything in the universe and how every reaction, interaction between atoms, and chemical reaction works down to the very littlest detail. I just ask that everyone keep an open mind to this and look at it yourself. I for one have used electrolysis to create a flammable gas, Hydrogen like many other people. Even with only 12V of electricity and my very inefficient system of two metal probes I made it work. Who is to say that this technology cant be used and advanced. Its not being funded or taken seriously due to you skeptics that believe in 150+ year old ideas. Look up Stan Meyer on yahoo or Browns gas or water 4 gas or hydrogen garage. I urge you to try it yourselves because you dont have to believe anything that you dont want to or that you cant make happen youself, I did make this happen so i can see more clearly that this could work. Believing that something wont work because of something thought up over 100 years ago is blind on your part. Where would we be today if we though like people 100 years ago. Heck DNA was thought to be unimportant until the mid 1900's. I just say why not? Prove them wrong yourself or prove them right.

Using an alkali metal like lithium with water will release free hydrogen but it is not "only water" fueled. The energy source is the refined lithium and that requires more energy to refine and reduce. Obviously the moron who wrote the article is ignorant of basic physics and chemistry.
Why is it that the dumbest ten percent of the population are the ones aware of all the miracle energy sources, and conspiracies?

Travis: "The First Law of Thermodynamics was derived in the mid 1800's. To think that this knowledge applies to everything in the universe …"

It applies to everything we have evidence of so far. As much as people have tried, they've never found evidence of any violation of this law. The fact that the law was formulated so long ago and has gone that long without anyone ever able to find evidence of it being violated only speaks to its accuracy. Now someone claims they've violated it, that they have the makings of a perpetual energy machine (because the water doesn't get "used up", if you read what they say carefully), that they've essentially proved wrong one of the fundamental laws on which all science is based. All with NO evidence whatsoever. And you believe them?

Question for all people who know laws of thermodynamics. How is possible that platinum breaks H-H bonds of dihydrogen without energy from outside? (so called platinum adsorption phenomenon) Why not to break H-O bound in the similar way - it is only a little stronger.
