Direct Drives propulsion architecture
The direct drive is the most simple and effective of all propulsion architectures. In-wheel motors power all active wheels of the vehicle without any gears or mechanical transmissions. Fist direct drive system was implemented more than 100 years ago in 1895 by Porsche. In more than a century the in-wheel technology was improved and improved, but only in recent years some of the newest in-wheel motors models reached the potential for use in electric cars. Additional innovations and development in the fields of designing the motor and industrialization for their use are needed for the in-wheel motor to be accepted by all applications covered by automotive industry. With mass market, in-wheel motors will fall into right economical class, but even today they already surpass requirements in technical view. This is the challenge on which several teams and startups are working on.
